Tips of the Month
May Tip of the Month: Characteristics of Effective Writing
In order to improve your essay score as well as your overall score on the SAT Writing Section, practice improving your skills in the following writing areas:
*Consistency: Be sure you have consistent tense, pronoun, and agreement usage throughout your essay.
*Logical Expression of Your Ideas: Make sure your ideas are presented in a clear and concise order and that you use proper coordination and subordination.
*Clarity and Precision: Be careful of your word choice, and be sure your thoughts are clear and coherent. Be wary of empty words and weak passive verbs that may take away from your message.
*Appropriate Use of Conventions: Be sure that you use commas, parts of speech, and comparisons in your writing appropriately. Misuse of these conventions can make your writing seem unprofessional and sloppy. Proofreading will help you identify and correct many of these mistakes quickly.
April Tip of the Month: Writing Focus
A sound and clear focus in your essay will help you to receive the highest score possible. In order to improve your essay's focus, be sure to have a clear thesis and viewpoint based on your given topic. Then, be sure to have 2-3 points that you can prove through your own personal examples or examples taken from history or literature. Then, create a solid conclusion that helps to restate your thesis and wrap up your viewpoint on the given issue.
March Tip of the Month: Time Management
Since you only have 30 minutes to complete the essay portion of the New SAT, budget your time carefully. Use five minutes to outline and plan out your ideas, then write for twenty minutes. Then, use the last 5 minutes to proofread your paper to make it as error free as possible. Even though they will judge this as a draft rather than a final copy of an essay, they will notice errors in punctuation, grammar, and word usage.
February Tip of the Month: Improving Basic Writing Skills
A basic step to improving your writing skills for the essay portion of the SAT exam is to read more. Reading the classics and more challenging works will expose you to good writing and help you to bring your writing to the next level.
